ABSTRACT

The hidden risk of acupuncture has become the factor of the high incidence of adverse reaction of acupuncture in clinical practice. The retrospective analysis and the typical cases analysis are especially important for the prevention from the hidden risk of acupuncture. In the paper, the relevant literatures were reviewed, the basic diseases were listed such as diabetes, hypertension and digestive gastric ulcer that were neglected by the physicians, and the adverse reactions induced by the therapeutic history and the body constitutions were analyzed. It was stated in the paper that because of the individual factors of patient, the risks of the atypical clinical accidents of acupuncture were extremely serious and easily neglected by the clinical acupuncture physicians. It is very necessary to remind the clinical acupuncture physicians to understand the basic diseases, basic treatment as well as the peculiarity of body constitution of the patients besides their chief complaints. Moreover, acupuncture should be applied very carefully after identifying the pulse condition and the contraindication so as to ensure the patient's safety and obtain the optimal efficacy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe the efficacy differences between acupoint catgut embedding at cervical Jiaji (EX-B 2) points combined with electroacupuncture (EA) at acupoints near ear and simple EA for the treatment of nervous tinnitus.

METHODSSixty-three patients were randomly divided into an observation group (31 cases) and a control group (32 cases). The observation group was treated with acupoint catgut embedding at C4-C7 Jiaji (EXB 2) points on the affected side combined with EA at acupoints near ears, including Ermen (TE 21). Tinggong (SI 19), Tinghui (GB 2), etc.; the control group was treated with EA at regular acupoints near ears alone. The EA treatment was given five times per week, and the acupoint catgut embedding was given once every two weeks. All the treatment was given for 6 weeks. The Tinnitus severity score (TSS)was applied to assess the severity of tinnitus before the treatment, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks into treatment and one month after treat ment. Also the efficacy of two groups was compared.

RESULTSAfter the treatment, the severity of tinnitus was both improved in two groups at each time point (all P<0.05). which was more significant in the observation group (P<0.05, P<0.01). The cured and markedly effective rate was 77.4% (24/31) in the observation group, which was superior to 50.0% (16/32) in the control group (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONThe short-term and long-term efficacy of acupoint catgut embedding at cervical Jiaji (EX-B 2) points combined with electroacupuncture are both superior to those of simple electroacupuncture for treatment of nervous tinnitus.

ABSTRACT

Objective To assess the therapeutic effect of music- regulated laser therapy on mild and moderate primary hypertension (PH) so as to provide clinical evidence for the development of an effective non-drug therapy for hypertension. Methods One hundred mild and moderate PH patients were divided into obser-vation ( n = 50 ) and control groups ( n = 50 ) according to their stage of hypertension. There were two phases of treatment with 6 weeks in each phase for a total of 12 weeks. In the first phase, patients in the observation group received music-regulated laser therapy while the control group received drug therapy. In the second phase, the treatments were reversed, with the observation group receiving the drugs. The blood pressure and quality of life (QOL) of all the patients was evaluated after each phase. Results Before therapy there were no significant differences in average blood pressure or QOL between the groups. After the first phase, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) had been reduced significantly in both groups, but the decrease was significantly greater in the control group. The score on each item of the QOL evaluation was not significantly different between the two groups. After the second phase, blood pressure had decreased further in the observation group, but no significant change was observed in the control group, and there was no significant difference in blood pressure between two groups. The scores on each item of the QOL evaluation were not significantly different between the two groups, but average somatic symptoms, healthy and pleasant feelings, task perform-ance and life satisfaction were significantly ameliorated in both groups. Conclusions Music-regulated laser therapy can lower the blood pressure of mild and moderate PH patients effectively. Compared with antihyperten-sion drugs, music-regulated laser therapy provides a weaker effect in lowering blood pressure, but plays an e-quivalent role in improving the QOL of patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effects of moxibustion and electroacupuncture at points on the Du meridian on the expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide ( CGRP ) in rats with spinal cord injury ( SCI ).Methods Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into a normal control group, a SCI group, a moxibustion group and an electroacupuncture group. Rats in the latter three groups were subjected to spinal cord transection under a microscope. Moxibustion and electroacupuncture were administered to rats in those groups at points on the Du meridian daily for 3 days beginning on the 7th day after the operation, Immunofluorescence staining was used to observe any changes in the CGRP-positive area of the spinal cord's dorsal horn. Western blotting was used to detect changes in the content of CGRP in the spine. Results The CGRP-positive stained area of spinal cord's dorsal horn was significantly larger in the moxibustion and electroacupuncture groups than in the SCI group. CGRP content was also significantly higher. Any differences between the moxibustion and electroacupuncture groups were not significant. The CGRP-positive area and its content in the normal control group were not significantly different from those in the moxibustion and electroacupuncture groups. Conclusions Either moxibustion or electroacupuncture at points on the Du meridian can promote the expression of CGRP in rats after SCI. There is no significant difference between their effects.

ABSTRACT

@#Objective To investigate the patterns of frequency domain indexes of surface electronic signals of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients' paraspinal muscles by using surface electromyographic (sEMG) techniques .Methods 25 AIS patients enrolled, 7 males, 18 females, ages range from 11 to 21 years old. All of the enrolled patients undertook the Biering Sorensen test(BST) and the object-lifting test, a Finland made type ME3000P sEMG instrument was applied to record the electronic activities of paraspinal muscles(convex /concave) of all subjects, and the frequency domain indexes: median frequency(MF),mean power frequency(MPF), zero crossing rate(ZCR)were analyzed. Results The wave amplitudes and scales of paraspinal muscles electronic frequency domain indexes(MF, MPF, ZCR) were lower than the other tested positions when recorded at the zone of apex vertebrae, and MFslope, MPFslope and ZCRslope all showed a linear degressive tendency as the exercise time was extended. Conclusion Paraspinal muscles at the zone of apex vertebrae have low fatigue durabilities and more likely to be exhausted. sEMG ought to be one of the objective examinations used to evaluate the differences of electronic activities of paraspinal muscles(convex /concave) of AIS patients, and may have a promising value in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Objective Using surface electromyography (sEMG) techniques to investigate the patterns of frequency domain indexes of sEMC signals recorded from adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients' paraspinal muscles. Methods Twenty-five AIS patients were enrolled. All the patients undertook the Biering Sorensen test ( BST) ,the object-lifting test and a semi-bridge test, the ME3000P sEMG instrument was applied to record the electric activities of paraspinal muscles (convex/concave) of all subjects, and the time domain indexes such as averaged EMG(AEMG)and spectrum area(SPA) were analyzed, values in three tests were compared with one way ANOVA. Results The differences of AEMGs and SPAs on both convex and concave sides among the three tests showed no statistical significances (P = 0. 10,0.23, 0. 24 and 0. 45, respectively). Conclusions Any of the Biering Sorensen test( BST) , the object-lifting test or the semi-bridge test can be used to test the electric activities of paraspinal muscles (convex/concave) of AIS patients.

ABSTRACT

@#patients with steady vital signs and affected by combined somnipathy at the early stage of stroke were divided into three groups according to the date of admission:the experimental group(Group E)and the control groups(Group C1 and Group C2).The rehabilitation programs to all patients are the same, except the somnipathy,(1) patients of Group E were adopted the method of acupuncture and moxibustion coupled with taping and pressing their ear acupuncture points to improve their quality of sleep,(2) patients of Group C1 were asked to administer orally the traquilizers, and (3) no interference was conducted to the patients of Group C2.After 8 weeks of treatment,it is found that,(1) the speed of recovery of the motor function of the patients of both Group E and Group C1 is faster than that of Group C2 (P<0.01).(2) The total sleeping hours of Group E is significantly compared with that of Group C1(P<0.05).This shows that the long-term effects of the acupuncture therapy on sleep are superior to that of the tranquilizer. It suggests that the acupuncture therapy is an improtant method to treat the sequelae and syndrome of stroke.
